Massive Earthquake Strikes Northern Philippines
At Least Five Dead, 130 Injured
Powerful Quake Causes Landslides, Damages Buildings
At least five people died and 130 others were injured after a powerful earthquake struck the northern Philippines on Wednesday. The 7.6-magnitude quake hit at 4:23 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 14 kilometers east of San Julian, Eastern Samar.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake was tectonic in origin and caused several landslides and building collapses. The hardest-hit areas include the provinces of Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte.
Rescue workers are currently searching for survivors and providing assistance to those affected. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has deployed teams to the affected areas to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
The quake also triggered tsunami warnings in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan, but these warnings have since been lifted.
