Dutch Artist Joost Klein Disqualified from Eurovision
Backstage Altercation Leaves Eurovision Without Netherlands
Just hours before the start of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, the Netherlands' representative Joost Klein was disqualified following a backstage incident.
"Disqualification is a Travesty," Says Klein
In a statement, the Eurovision Broadcasting Union (EBU), which is responsible for the contest, said that Klein was not allowed to participate in either of Friday's two rehearsals ahead of the main event. The EBU did not provide details of the incident, but sources say it involved an altercation with a member of the production crew.
Klein has since released a statement expressing his disappointment and frustration at the decision. "This disqualification is a travesty," he said. "I have worked so hard for this moment and it's been taken away from me for something that was not my fault."
Dutch Broadcaster Furious, Fans Bemused
The Dutch broadcaster, AVROTROS, has expressed its fury at the EBU's decision. "We are extremely disappointed and angry that Joost has been disqualified," said a spokesperson. "We believe that he was wronged and that the EBU has made a mistake."
Fans of the contest have also reacted with bemusement and anger. Many have taken to social media to express their support for Klein and to criticize the EBU's decision.
